Apples trees grown from seed will not produce the same variety of apples as the tree that produced them! In fact, it is most likely that that a tree grown from a seed will produce odd sized and bad tasting fruit. Every seed contains a brand new and completely unique variety of apple. Most of these new varieties are not good for eating; so thousands of seeds must be planted to find the few trees that produce the tasty varieties that we know and love. Once a desirable variety is found, it can be “grafted” onto other trees to create an entire orchard. This is true for many other varieties of fruit including peaches, cherries, olives and grapes.
